Learning how to stop on hockey skates is often one of the most challenging skills a beginning player
will learn. It goes without saying that to be an effective player, you need to learn to stop on a
dime as the situation warrants.
One shouldn't assume that they can learn to stop right away as an absolute beginner. It often first
takes mastering the art of skating and developing a sense for how your move on ice.
As in learning other skills in life and sports, you can expect a few falls while you're learning. The
key is to not get frustrated, knowing that for every fall you are getting closer to grasping the
skill as second nature.
Begin by slowing slightly on your skates. Then when you decide to initiate your stop, turn your body
and angle your skates forward maintaining your balance in such a way that when your skates start to
kick up ice you don’t fall over. As mentioned, expect a few falls until you master the art. There are
numerous tutorials available online and on Youtube that are highly recommended for getting an even
better idea of the intracasies involved.
